- September is Puppy Mill Awareness Month
September is Puppy Mill Awareness Month... a time to highlight and reflect on the harsh realities of puppy mills and the suffering of countless pups bred in these facilities. Pups in these places are treated like products, bred in horrific conditions just to make a profit. The result? Puppies with severe health and behavioral issues, and adult dogs living in constant neglect. At Cavalier Rescue of Florida, we typically share the rescued momma / breeder pups that have suffered at these puppy mills, but it’s important to share the other side of this brutal cycle. Their puppies. Daisy, 3-month-old puppy, was recently rescued as an owner surrender. Purchased from a breeder in Missouri and then shipped to Miami to her loving parents. Shortly after her joyful arrival, Daisy began experiencing vomiting and diarrhea. Her family rushed her to the emergency vet, where she endured countless tests, a feeding tube, IV fluids, and round-the-clock care. Despite spending over $4,000, Daisy showed no improvement. Faced with the impossible choice of euthanasia, continued costly treatment, or surrender, her devastated family chose to surrender her into CRF’s care—hoping she could be saved. Thanks to your support , CRF’s Emergency Funds were ready. Daisy was rushed to the UF Emergency Hospital, where the veterinary team fought tirelessly for her life. But after two days in critical care, her condition worsened. She lost mental awareness, suffered cardiac arrest, and was humanely released from her suffering in the arms of her vet. This is one of the hardest days that volunteers in rescue can experience, but it is nothing in comparison to what precious Daisy endured in her young, sweet life, she was a baby. Born into puppy mills, puppies are sold to excited families; many times, these are the tragic outcomes. Tragic times continue for the momma pups who get bred over and over again. The vicious cycle continues… When lucky, CRF can save and rescue momma pups from their dreadful and deplorable conditions. Like our recent Sun-Sational Seven breeder rescue, we can rehabilitate these pups with love, care and commitment to their health and well-being; then they are adopted to loving homes. These are the great days. We couldn’t save Daisy and we know there are many more like her; this sweet soul didn’t deserve this fate. Our hearts break for Daisy and the mill pups left behind. These are the worst days; we cry for all for the sweet pups that we can’t save. xo CRF shares this story as a cautionary tale… We love our rescue pups, but we understand that many people don't want to wait for one of our rare puppies and decide to work with a breeder. For those who work with a breeder--please do your homework. Find an ethical breeder that is respected, caring, responsible and standard bearers of the breed--this applies to any breed of dog. CRF focuses on Cavaliers – Black & Tans, Blenheims, Rubies and Tri-colors, but all breed-specific rescue groups know there are mills out there churning and burning through these pups. Our friends at @bailingoutbenji have done extensive work and built a nationwide search tool that allows you to research licensed dog breeders on the state or federal level before you bring a puppy into your family. Click to begin your research, be an advocate for safe breeding and adoptions. https://bailingoutbenji.com/search-engine/ A puppy mill can be obvious, or it can be well hidden. A puppy mill can sell online, in a store, on your social media feed, even your local paper. In the name of Daisy, please do your research. Please be aware...and share with your friends, you might unknowingly support a puppy mill if you purchase a dog from certain sources or under certain conditions. Here are red flags to look out for: 💔 Puppy purchased at a pet store or flea markets 💔 Puppy being sold via Facebook/Internet or Craig's List 💔 Breeder won’t allow visits to their facility 💔 Puppy shipped via internet without direct contact 💔 Breeder met you in a parking lot or roadside 💔 Breeder won’t take the dog back after purchase 💔 No requirement to spay or neuter 💔 Puppy showed signs of illness shortly after arrival And one of the biggest red flags? Any breeder willing to ship a puppy— period . These dogs are often transported in trucks or air cargo for hours or even days, sometimes alongside sick animals. Was Daisy already ill before she was shipped? We’ll never know. But her suffering speaks volumes. Disreputable breeders can create convincing websites or social media pages that appear to be warm, family-run operations. In Daisy’s case, the buyers believed they were purchasing from a small family breeder. We have every reason to believe that wasn’t true. This is why Puppy Mill Awareness Month is so critical — it’s about exposing this dark side of commercial breeding and pushing for real change.💔 Recognizing these signs can help prevent the support of unethical breeding practices and protect both puppies and their mothers from ongoing neglect. Your donation ensures we’re ready for the next emergency, the next urgent rescue, the next cavalier who needs us without a moment to spare. Please click here to donate . Daisy, we wish you nothing but rainbows, love and everlasting joy over the rainbow bridge. Love, the Cavaliers of CRF xo
- Summer Cavalier Beach & Boating Safety!
Summer has officially arrived, and our beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are eagerly anticipating adventures with their wonderful humans! Many of our precious puppies will be enjoying the beautiful beaches and water of Florida . While the beach offers exciting opportunities for fun and play, it's crucial to remain diligent and understand the potential beach hazards to ensure the safety and comfort for your Cavaliers Did you know that your Ruby, Blenheim, Black and Tan or Tri-color could face serious health risks, such as intestinal blockage known as sand impaction, from sniffing or swallowing sand? Symptoms like vomiting and gastrointestinal pain can indicate this serious issue, which can even be life-threatening. To ensure your pup enjoys a safe and delightful beach day, consider these essential preventive measures: Keep a close eye on your adorable pup to prevent them from eating or sniffing too much sand. Stay vigilant about hydration; bring plenty of fresh water, as your Cavalier should avoid salt water. Remember that those tiny paws are sensitive! Hot sand can cause painful burns, so be mindful of the sand temperature. Stay informed about water conditions, such as rough surf, riptides, and the presence of dangerous sea creatures like jellyfish, stingrays, and man-of-war. Bring a blanket, towels and umbrella! Visit the beach early in the morning or late afternoon, avoiding peak sun. Don’t underestimate the intense sunshine state Florida heat; it can lead to heat stroke, which poses serious risks for our furry friends. https://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/systemic/heatstroke-dogs If you and your pup are hitting the high seas, luxuriating lakeside or canoeing down the lazy river… like humans, please take extra care for safe and fun boating adventures. Like many Floridians, boating is a beautiful pastime of the sunshine state lifestyle. And taking your Cavalier with you for a day on the water could be a routine part of your summer! Be a perfect first mate to your pup and ensure dog boating safety . Cavalier Rescue of Florida recommends the following Cavalier boating safety tips: Start with short trips to get your Cavalier comfortable and always supervise your pup while on the boat. Safety first - properly fitted life jacket is crucial for all salty dogs, plus leashes and harnesses are a must. Help them with their sea legs - assure dog friendly flooring is on the boat. Don’t forget the S-PUP-F - sunscreen for their noses. BOOP! Always have fresh, clean water available. Avoid letting them drink from the lake or sea, as it may contain harmful organisms. Stay Alert: Continuously monitor your Cavies for signs of stress or discomfort and be prepared to adjust your plans as needed. We love to have our precious pups by our sides all the time and enjoying adventures together. By following these suggestions, you can create a relaxing and safe beach or boat experience filled with joy and unforgettable moments with your delightful, playful, and lovable Cavalier King Charles Spaniel! Love, the Cavaliers of CRF! Xo
- April is National Volunteer Month throughout the USA!
April became National Volunteer Month as part of President George H. W. Bush's 1000 Points of Light campaign in 1991. We celebrate the beauty and heart of all our Cavalier Rescue of Florida volunteers. Meet our team! xoxo Leader of the Pack, Tracy Baker, who leads our wonderful, selfless, loving volunteers at Cavalier Rescue of Florida . Like the rest of us, Tracy Baker was captivated with this incredible breed when she was shown a photo of a friend’s Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy! So much adorableness and beauty in such a sweet, beautiful floofy package. With Olivia and Sydney it was a life changing addition to her family. Tracy was inspired to get more involved and was shocked to discover that this breed dogs had a rescue group OR could need rescue at all. After fostering dozens of cavaliers over the past eight years, Tracy landed in the Executive Director role, where she is responsible for the many decisions helping these beautiful creatures on their road to health and happiness. Tracy works hand-in-hand with our all-volunteer team covering this expansive state of Florida , all of whom jump in at a moment’s notice to rescue Blenheim, Black and Tan, Ruby and Tri-color cavies , anticipate and vet their needs, transport them to priority care and loving fosters, and ultimately ushering them to safety. “Nothing is perfect, but we lovingly treat all the pups as if they are own, safety is key,” says Baker. The organization and all of its moving parts have thrived under Tracy’s watchful eye. There are more thorough background checks for dog rescue volunteers, fosters and adopters Greater medical care and rehabilitation Faster response times to inquiries and rescues Detailed record keeping Very earnest fund raising efforts , donation success and strategies to give Plus, very importantly, more effective communication through social media, website and delivering information to adopter families. Her greatest reward is seeing the transformation of the cavies from intake to their fur-ever homes . They can be overweight or underweight and they typically arrive sad, scared, neglected, and many times feeling unwell. Safe from previous precarious situations, including frightful puppy mills, with love and medical attention, the rescued pups are transformed into happier and healthier dogs. Often, they arrive as bonded pairs, feeling comfort from each other. “ This is why CRF volunteers do what they do. Any time, day or night, anywhere in the state… Tracy adds, “we are in service to these beautiful creatures. We are very fortunate and blessed to have such wonderful volunteers who will do anything they can to help these dogs. We are so very lucky to have sweet cavaliers in our lives.” Tracy Baker Volunteering shouldn't feel like another thing you have to mark off of your "to-do list." Whether you're a more hands-on worker or someone who enjoys administrative work, CRF has a role for you as a volunteer ! From fostering, transporting, vetting, to helping organize thank you notes, reviewing online ads, applications, calling on referrals, there is a place for YOU to excel as a volunteer. < back to home Olive Adopt Me! Daytona Beach Greet Olive , an adorable brown and white Cavalier mix. The first thing you will notice about Olive is her prominent eyes caused by shallow eye orbits. This petite girl also has advanced cataracts and can only see light. Don’t worry, little Olive still enjoys life and has so much love to give. With verbal cues and a regular routine, Olive learns quickly. Once she knows where her food and water are she eats like a champ. Olive is learning words like “lift” when she is about to be picked up and “yummy” when a treat is near! Other words like ‘outside’, and ‘bedtime’ help Olive navigate her world. She is housebroken and settles into her bed at night. Olive is learning to take short walks with her foster sibling. Understandably, she moves slowly and cautiously as she explores. However, riding in a stroller is one of Olive’s favorite things to do for longer outings. What a fun and safe way to enjoy the great outdoors. Providing Olive with a secure home environment, both inside and outdoors, will be critical to keeping her safe. Sweet Olive is looking for a special human to help guide her along her journey. Can she count on you to be the one to do that? 🐶 Age: 7 years old. 👍🏻 Weight: Tips the scales at 10 lbs. 🐾 Circumstances: Owner passed away. ❤️ Health: Other than her vision issue, Emily is in general good health for her age.
