Savannah
Pensacola
Savannah is one of seven traumatized Cavaliers rescued from a puppy mill operation in April. The neglect these dogs suffered was obvious, what is less so is what the long-term behavioral effects might be. Potential adopters need extraordinary sensitivity and patience with the needs of these pups that are at the extreme of rescue’s definition.
Savannah is a simply gorgeous young Blenheim Cavalier, though a typical puppy mill rescue that needs time to become socialized and feel safe. She’ll greet you with a wagging tail when you come home, yet is always ready to retreat to a safe place should you get too close. Her sanctuary is a crate with an open door, and several have been placed around to provide that refuge. However, she’ll always keep you in sight. She wants to be part of the action, but socialization will be a work in progress to get her comfortable with her new life.
Savannah’s favorite place is to go out for her backyard breaks. Her tail is wagging, she loves to explore, chase geckos, and follows her foster’s dog around the yard. She likes to fetch a ball, but won’t return it. Dog toys are another favorite and she’ll sneak them away and take them to her kennel for safe keeping. She loves to sleep with them, almost like a momma dog with her pups.
Leash training is progressing, though only in the yard as a neighborhood stroll seems too stressful yet. Come bath time or a vet visit, Savannah curls up and submits. Those times or a home visitor are a setback in her trust.
While skittish and timid at first, Savannah has begun to show a very sweet personality. You’ll catch beautiful moments of locking with her gorgeous eyes. We know this girl will continue to blossom and thrive with love and patience, and she deserves all the best that a furever home can offer.
