The Villages

Melbourne is one of seven traumatized Cavaliers rescued from a puppy mill operation in April.  The neglect these dogs suffered was obvious, what is less so is what the long-term behavioral effects might be.  Potential adopters need extraordinary sensitivity and patience with the needs of these pups that are at the extreme of rescue’s definition.

Here’s Melbourne, or Melly if you want to be casual, a pretty Blenheim girl that, like too many of our puppy mill pups, is going to be a heart that will take time to win over.

While Melbourne’s progress to-date has been slow, we are talking about only weeks in foster.  At this point she doesn’t like to be picked up, or for that matter pretty much be cornered in any way.  The crate is familiar, and she’ll go there, but only if you don’t come near to close the door.

Yet there’s been a very charming compromise that Melbourne has just recently offered, and indeed, we’re letting her set the pace.  She’s decided that there’s one special chair that she’ll let you sit on with her.  From there, ever so slowly, advances are taking place.  First it was a little petting, then some gentle brushing, and now she’s started to ask for belly rubs!  Cryable moments all as the sweetness of this tiny girl begins to show itself.

For some of us, just understanding what they’ve been through opens our own hearts to immeasurable love and patience we didn’t even know we had to give.  And with dear Melbourne, we’re certain it will be worth it.

🐶 Age: About 4 years old.

👍🏻 Weight: 15 lbs.

🐾 Circumstances: A puppy mill rescue.

🐕 Temperament: One lucky girl who’s starting to know it!

❤️ Health: Melbourne arrived in rescue with fleas, ear infections, and severe dental disease, and of course, all are being treated.  She also has a condition called in layman’s terms “dry eye” and will likely require drops indefinitely.  She’s also scheduled for spay surgery.  CRF microchips all rescues.

🏡 Forever Home Requirements:

✔️ Low alone time/someone with her much of day.

✔️ Extreme patience because of her fear and willingness to move slowly with her.

✔️ Safe and secured fenced yard.

✔️ Compatible canine companion of similar size.
